In 2005, the Atlantic Yards redevelopment project was proposed in Brooklyn. The 5$ billion planned construction of an Arena and building complex promised the return of professional sports to the borough but would rely upon the partial demolition of an existing neighborhood.

After a standoff between the developer, residents, and community activists, construction of Barclay’s Center began in 2011. As of 2021, the rest of the project is uncompleted.
